Driftwood Harbor Project Introduction

What are you doing here?

Hi, I'm Will and I'm a game and web developer here to share a project I've been working on for some time now.  I'm creating a game called Driftwood Harbor and I wanted to share it in development so I can get input for anyone who's interested in playing it.  I'll try my best to post updates when I make any major changes to the game.  For more up to date information follow the project on twitter https://twitter.com/DriftwoodHarbor .

So what is Driftwood Harbor?

Driftwood Harbor is a 2D pixel adventure, rpg game.  The player is a pirate who's been shipwrecked on an abandoned island and needs to find a way to escape.  Unfortunately, they've  landed on  dangerous island and their ship is completely destroyed.  The player must fight enemies, collect resources and complete quests all moving toward the ultimate goal of repairing their ship and going home.  The game will follow more of an RPG style than a story, the player needs to find better items, complete quests and get stronger to progress in the game.

How does the player get stronger?

The cool part about the game is that the player's strength is almost entirely item based.  Treasure chests spawn all across the island and the player must fend off enemies and search for these chests.  In the chests the players will find a huge variety of items that all play a role in the game.  Weapons and Armor have randomized stats and abilities making almost no two items the same.  This gives the player a unique experience each time they play and a sense of unexpectedness and makes fighting more complicated than just mashing buttons.

What else can you do?

In addition to fighting and looking for treasure the player must also gather resources from the world around them.  This includes mining, fishing, chopping trees, gathering, farming and cooking.  I won't go too much into detail on these mechanics for now but some will involve mini games giving the player a break from the main gameplay.  There will also be a number of quests the player must complete to progress in the game.

So how much is complete?

Currently I have a lot of the mechanics implemented in the game and I'm working on creating a playable prototype to show off the basic idea of the game.  I'm focusing mostly on the programming and design for now before working more on the artwork and sound.  I plan on posting a video soon walking through the core mechanics of the game.

Any last words?

If you got this far, thanks for reading my awkward interview with myself.  I wanted to give a taste of what this game is going to be like so I can begin sharing my design and hopefully receiving some input.  The game is still in the early phases of development, but I've been making a lot of progress and I hope to have a playable demo soon.  My next dev log will be much longer and showcase some actual mechanics in the game but for now I wanted to give some more information on what Driftwood Harbor is all about.
